Two for Tuesday: Double Feature Atomic Era Monster Movies!

I have always loved the Atomic era monster movies (1950's-60's).  It could be cheesy or not, I loved them the same.  While searching YouTube (when I should be working on my basement), I found that a whole bunch of old movies are available on there.  I believe that most of these are now free by public domain as their copyrights expired.  If I am wrong, let me know.  Anyways, because of the sizes of the video clip, I can't upload the movies to my blog, so I am leaving the link and a clip to a trailer for the movies.

The Bedford Incident

In writing about nuclear depth bombs in my previous entries has started to make me think back of the 1965 classical movie, “The Bedford Incident”.  If you are interested in Cold War dramas, this is one to add to “the must see” list.  It stars several heavy hitter actors, Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier, Eric Portman, and Martin Balsam. 

I don’t want to give too much away with it, but it about a US destroyer, the USS Bedford, pursuing a Soviet submarine in the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) gap.  Richard Widmark is the tough, demanding captain that pushing his men to the breaking point.  Sidney Poitier is a civilian reporter that was given permission to interview the captain at sea.  Eric Portman is an NATO advisor on the ship that is a former WWII U-Boat commander. Finally, Martin Balsam is a naval reservist doctor that has been called to duty on aboard the ship.

Movie Review: “The Iron Lady” (2012)

I liked this movie!  Meryl Streep well deserves every award and nomination that she gets for her role as Margaret Thatcher.  This movie is about Margaret Thatcher, the woman that rose to power as one of the longest lasting Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and not about her policies. They touch on her policies, as it would not be possible not to without explaining her decline as the head of her party.  Whether you like Thatcher or despised her, one can’t deny that she was a powerful figure in the British politics.   

The movie is done through flashbacks, after Thatcher has suffered her strokes and memory losses.  While I don’t recall them ever giving an actual date when the modern day scenes are suppose to be taking place, one event where they place an statue of her in Parliament and that occurred in Feb., 2007.  As part of her memory lost, she is repeated visited by her dead husband, Sir Dennis Thatcher, played by Jim Broadbent. 

There are scenes in the movie that touch on what I am doing for my Falklands project and the Anarchy in the UK project.  The Falklands section is probably only 5 to 10 minutes long, but was very interesting, especially with her meeting with the US Secretary of State, Alexander Haig and the scene dealing with the sinking of the General Belgrano.

Again, I enjoyed it and think it is worth the seeing if one is interested in the 1980’s UK.
